As the assistant director of Aquatics, CJ Stancheski has shared an insight of his role, the accomplishments and impact he has had on the program, and the students he works with. 

Let’s take a look at Stancheski’s journey of achievements and the positive influence has had on Rec Sports.

Stancheski’s journey in Aquatics began as a graduate assistant several years ago. From coordinating swim and dive meets to managing academic classes and sport club practices, Stancheski’s role as the assistant director of Aquatics has a wide range of responsibilities. 

With a background and passion in information technology, Stancheski found his niche in overseeing Aquatic events and programs within the Rec Sports’ natatorium. His technical expertise came into play when troubleshooting equipment and working with complex systems like touch pads and scoreboards at swim meets. Stancheski’s ability to merge his passion for technology along with his love for aquatics has made him a valuable asset to Rec Sports and its Aquatics program.

One of the standout achievements of Stancheski’s career is his commitment to developing and empowering students. Recognizing that many students join Aquatics as lifeguards but may not pursue it as a long-term career, Stancheski took the initiative to revamp the student position and create valuable, transferable skills. 

By giving the students responsibilities such as running meetings, organized trainings and even involving them in the hiring process, Stancheski has created a nurturing environment where students can grow both personally and professionally. 

Witnessing the growth of students from lifeguards to head lifeguards, and eventually to aquatics supervisors, gives Stancheski a sense of pride and satisfaction.

Stancheski has been involved in hosting three collegiate swimming and diving championships. These high-profile events, including the SEC and Mountain West Championships, required meticulous planning, coordination and execution. 

His operational prowess and attention to detail played a crucial role in ensuring the success of these championships. Through his contributions, Stancheski has elevated the program’s reputation and established it as a preferred host for major aquatic events.

Rec Sports and Aquatics have not only shaped Stancheski’s professional growth but also made an impact on his personal life.
