Summer at the Rec: Everything You Need to Know
Amid closures, Rec Sports’ summer offerings include Aggie Strong, Lifeguard Certification, Intramural Sports and more
Summer is here, and while the main Rec Center is undergoing exciting renovations, there are still plenty of ways to stay active, relax, and have fun with Rec Sports. Whether you’re on campus for classes or just hanging around College Station for the break, we’ve got your guide to making the most of the Rec this summer.
Closures & Hours
The indoor areas of the Student Recreation Center will be closed for the summer due to major renovations. That means no access to the weight room, indoor courts, track, or locker rooms. But don’t worry—Rec Sports isn’t taking a summer vacation. This summer, you can enjoy the Rec’s Backyard, join an intramural team, get lifeguard certified and more! The outdoor areas of the Student Rec Center will be open during these hours, with modifications for holidays and summer adjusted times.
Both the Southside Rec Center and Polo Road Rec Center will remain open with summer hours, offering access to fitness equipment, recreation, and more. Group RecXercise classes will also be relocated to these facilities, so you won’t miss a beat in your workout routine. Be sure to check the Rec Sports website to stay on top of renovation updates, as well as class schedules and program registration. In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about what’s going on in the Rec this summer.
Try out Aggie Strong at the Southside Rec
Looking to push yourself this summer? Aggie Strong, a high-energy strength and conditioning class, is now offered at Southside Rec. It’s perfect for students who want a more structured workout led by certified instructors. These classes use equipment like kettlebells, resistance bands, and bodyweight movements to build strength and stamina.
Whether you’re training for specific growth or just want to stay in shape, Aggie Strong is a great way to stay motivated and active over the summer. Plus, the smaller group sizes make for a personalized environment while the outdoor setting on the Southside turf area provides fresh air and views of the golf course. Register for the Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday classes on the Rec Sports website.
Get Lifeguard Certified with Aquatics
Want a summer job that’s fun, meaningful, and right by the pool? Rec Sports is offering two lifeguard certification courses through the Aquatics department this summer. You’ll learn everything from water rescue techniques to first aid and CPR, all taught by experienced instructors.
Once certified, you’ll be eligible to apply for lifeguarding positions with Rec Sports—perfect for students looking to earn money, gain valuable skills, and enjoy the summer sun. The first course will be offered this weekend, May 16-18, so register online today. The second course will be held June 6-8.
Play in an Intramural Sports League
Summer intramurals are a fun way to stay active and meet new people. With the indoor courts closed, most leagues will take place outdoors or at alternative locations, including sand volleyball, outdoor basketball, and soccer.
Whether you join with a group of friends or sign up as a free agent, intramural leagues are a low-stress way to stay competitive and have a blast. Unlimited play passes are only $5 for the whole summer, so purchase one today and keep an eye on IM Leagues for upcoming summer sports.
Take Group RecXercise Classes
Group RecXercise isn’t taking a summer off—just changing venues. Most classes will be held at Southside Rec and Polo Road Rec Center this summer. From yoga and Zumba to cycling and HIIT, there’s something for every fitness level and interest.
Group classes are a great way to build routine and stay active, even when your schedule’s a little more relaxed. Plus, it’s more fun to work out with others and feel the energy of a class—even in the heat of summer. Check the class schedule online!
Hang Out in the Backyard
Even with the main Rec closed, the Backyard is staying open—and it’s the perfect place to chill, shoot hoops, or take a dip. The outdoor basketball and sand volleyball courts are available for pickup games, and the leisure and lap pools offer a refreshing way to beat the heat.
Bring your friends, your sunscreen, and make the Backyard your summer hangout spot. Whether you’re swimming laps, working on your tan, or just lounging poolside, it’s the best place to soak up some sun and enjoy summer on campus.
Explore the Great Outdoors with Rental Equipment
Outdoor Adventures’ rental center will be open this summer, and can be accessed through the backyard. With equipment available for rock climbing, water sports, camping gear, and yard games, you’re set for any summer endeavor! Rent canoes, kayaks, surf and paddle boards, or lifejackets and take a lake day, or check out tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and cooking supplies for a camping expedition to one of Texas’ 14 National Parks and 85 State Parks.
Additionally, Outdoor Adventures will be hosting two sessions of Venture Camp this July, packed with opportunities for incoming students to connect with nature and their future peers. If you know of an incoming student in search of hiking, breathtaking landscapes, and a crash course in Aggie spirit, visit the Venture Camp website for more information!!
