Rec Sports Myths: Debunked

Six common misconceptions about the Rec — and why they’re baloney

1. “Rec Sports is only for athletes and gym buffs!”

Think again! Many believe Rec Sports is exclusively for athletes or seasoned gym-goers, but the Rec offers beginner-friendly classes, wellness programs, and inclusive spaces for all fitness levels. A great place to test the waters is the Strength & Conditioning room or a Group RecXercise class.

2. “I have to pay to use the Rec!”

Access to all Rec Sports facilities is covered by your student fees, so all you need is your student ID or to download the app. On top of that, many offerings are included at no additional cost, including use of the Strength & Conditioning room, aquatics facilities, select Group RecXercise classes, and the Indoor Climbing Facility. Some programs like Intramural Sports single-game or tournament passes and Outdoor Adventures day trips have a small fee. For others, like personal training, sports clubs dues, or specialty classes, the value is hard to beat.

3. “Group fitness classes are for women!”

Group RecXercise classes are open to everyone and offer something for every interest and fitness level. With a wide variety of options including Cardio Kickboxing, Country Western Dance, Cycle & Core, or Sunrise Yoga, these classes are for all — and you’re sure to find your fit with Fitness & Wellness.

4. “It’s always too crowded!”

While peak hours can be busy, there are plenty of quieter times to take advantage of. Plus, you can track live facility counts on the Rec Sports website to see how many people are in the space at any given time — perfect for finding your ideal workout window.

5. “I can’t go to the Rec until I know what I’m doing!”

The Rec is the perfect environment for all fitness levels, including beginners just starting their journey. From small group training to adult learn-to-swim classes, Rec Sports offers programs that meet you where you are. No matter what you’re exploring, there’s always a staff member nearby to walk you through a new exercise safely, spot your lift, or get your heart pumping in a new cardio class.

6. “Rec Sports is only for working out!”

There’s more to Rec Sports than just fitness. Across all facilities, Rec Sports offers Group RecXercise classes, social events, and spaces for relaxation, including the day spas in the natatorium. If you’re looking to improve your overall well-being without breaking a sweat, try Esports, take a dip in the pools, or enjoy the views of Kyle Field from the terrace.
