Job Description

General Statement of Duties

Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Safety & Risk Management, the Safety & Risk   Management Instructor will provide safe and effective instruction to participants enrolled in safety training courses including First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Stop the Bleed programs.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Responsible for teaching and providing a safe and effective safety training course in First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Stop the Bleed programs.
  • Provide support to Risk Management training and education efforts for the department.
  • Assist with designated Risk Management projects.
  • Be available before and after class to answer questions from participants.
  • Complete all course records in a timely manner.
  • Assist in general maintenance and upkeep by putting away equipment at the end of class session.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Safety & Risk Management.

Experience and Abilities

  • Must be a currently enrolled student.
  • Following certifications are preferred:
    • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
    • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor
    • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED
    • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
    • Stop the Bleed Instructor

Training

  • Complete all Texas State Employee trainings.
  • Complete staff training and orientation provided by Director of Safety & Risk Management.

Environmental Conditions

  • Occasionally some bending and lifting of heavy items may be required.
  • Some work with cleaning chemicals may be required.
  • All staff are subject to occasional accident hazards in and around the facility.

Pay Scale

In accordance with departmental policy, Safety & Risk Management Instructors will be paid a rate of $15/hour to teach safety courses and a rate of $18/hour to teach safety courses if they hold Instructor level certification. During in-services, orientations, shadow shifts, meetings, etc. the Safety & Risk Management Instructor will be paid following the Rec Sports part-time worker pay scale Safety & Risk Management Instructor Training and start at an hourly wage of $12.20.

Learning Outcomes:

  • The Safety & Risk Management Instructor will evaluate, analyze, and integrate information from a variety of sources when teaching safety courses using print and digital materials.
  • The Safety & Risk Management Instructor will demonstrate a mastery of public speaking skills through leading risk management trainings and education efforts for the department.
  • The Safety & Risk Management Instructor will communicate with participants giving positive and corrective feedback to successfully pass safety courses.

Work Hours/Anticipated Schedule

The Safety & Risk Management Instructor position offers a flexible schedule that works around class schedules. Weekly workload varies between 9 to 20 hours.

Individuals must be available to teach on weekends and evenings as this is the primary position need. Certification courses range from 3.5 hours to 7.5 hours depending on the specific course being taught.

Individuals will also need to attend bi-weekly or monthly meetings with the full Safety & Risk Management staff.

Most shift times will be after business hours and will mainly require weekend and evening work between ideally Sunday through Thursday.
