A King Has Been Crowned

Meet ‘Mr. Intramurals’, the winningest intramural sports competitor in Texas A&M Rec Sports history

Story by Mason Kautz

Gareth Cupples ‘22 is officially the winningest intramural champion at Texas A&M Rec Sports, winning a total of 180 games in his time as an undergraduate. The December grad met with Rec Sports staff for an interview to discuss his wins and how much they meant to him.

“All of the glory doesn’t go to me, it goes to my teammates,” Cupples said. “Each and every teammate has contributed enormously to my success, so I’m just grateful.”

With charismatic sarcasm and infectious enthusiasm, Cupples described his unbridled competitiveness and perseverance. He elaborated his early infatuation with winning and how that spirit has transcended over his academic and athletic career. His achievements include participation in soccer and football in his youth, founding an ultimate frisbee team at his high school, along with competing in swim and track. Then he came to A&M for Industrial Distribution and found Rec Sports.

“From an early age, I had to compete,” Cupples said. “Obviously I’m a winner in the classroom; I’m about to graduate only one semester behind…the winning mindset has been there from day one, and each intramural victory has shown me just how important winning is, and so it just drives and motivates me to keep winning.”

To any Aggie brave enough to compete for the title of THE Mr. Intramurals, Cupples said:

“Holding tryouts for your teams, really buying into the offseason, having a workout program, and as well as just shooting for the stars. I shot for the moon, and I landed among the stars.”

And lastly, to peek into the mind of an Intramural champion, Cupples recited his favorite inspirational quote.

“If you’re not first, you’re last, I think that’s Ricky Bobby, one of the great philosophers of our time. There’s just so many quotes out there, but the one that is closest to my heart is for sure, if you’re not first, you’re last.”

Cupples graduated from the Industrial Distribution program at Texas A&M in December, but will forever in our hearts be THE Mr. Intramurals.
