Staff Spotlight

Under the bright lights of Penberthy Fields, thousands of Aggies will compete each semester for a chance at the highly acclaimed title of Intramural Sports Champion. Intramural Sports (IM), a program area within the Texas A&M Department of Recreational Sports, averages over a dozen sports and 14,000 Aggie participants each semester. The program brings out friendly competition and grants students the chance to connect with others and stay active.

Leading this effort is Kaulin Andric ‘19. Andric competed in a multitude of sports from a young age, so he and his passion for the industry grew together. In his time as an undergrad student at the University of Georgia, Andric funneled his passion into a part-time job and became a sports officiator.

As he neared completion of his bachelor’s degree, Andric began to consider a future in the sports industry and recreation. He applied for and gained admission to Texas A&M University’s Master of Science in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Management program. While in school at Texas A&M, Andric worked for Rec Sports as a graduate assistant for IM under the supervision of Oscee Wheatfall and Jerrod Jackson. Upon graduation with his master’s, Andric was hired full-time and has devoted his time since to Rec Sports.

“I think Rec Sports, in general, is just prestigious…. realizing that I could do this as a career path and realizing that A&M had a really prestigious Rec Sports program and their Intramural Sports programs is one of the biggest in the country and still is to this day.”

Over the past several years, Andric has continued to grow and develop into his current role as assistant director of Intramural Sports. In addition to his dedication to furthering our IM program, Andric has committed to improving the experience of our student employees with his leadership on the Student Employee Appreciation Committee alongside co-chair Emily Patterson, assistant director of Operations & Events.

The growth that we see from students is what I love about this job the most. If the question at the end of the day is, “hey, what do you love about your job the most?” It’s the students that I get to work with. Our students are passionate about coming to work, they’re motivated and ready to work. It’s a blessing to have students come through, learn so much about themselves, about other people, and really grow into stellar employees for other companies. And that’s our goal. We want you to be the best official out on the field; obviously, we want that, but at the end of the day, for me, it’s the soft skills and hard skills that you learned for what would be a job coming out of college, and that’s the goal for us.

Despite having intramural games ending late into the night, Andric still finds time to give back to Bryan-College Station. Outside of his role at Rec Sports, Andric is vice president of the College Station football and baseball chapter, where he focuses on training and recruitment. Andric commented that his time in this role has aided his work at Rec Sports.

“[The skills] that I’ve learned out on the fields definitely translate into trainings here. Being able to take some of those real life examples with coaches and players in plays [and being] able to translate them into our trainings is invaluable for our students.”

Andric’s involvement with the community is ever-present and limitless. This summer, Andric will be one of the chosen namesakes for Fish Camp, an extended orientation program for new students. Namesakes are nominated by their peers and selected by a committee as members of Texas A&M who exhibit the core values and have demonstrated a positive impact on Texas A&M.

The work Andric has poured into IM is extensive, and he shows no sign of slowing down. Rec Sports is thankful for his continued devotion, admiration, and loyalty, and we are eager witnesses to Andric’s continued success as he grows in the profession.
