Wind whipped across Michigan’s green fields as rain drenched archers prepared to take aim at the 2026 USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals. Having travelled over a thousand miles, the Texas A&M archery club brought home their 24th nationals championshipship. Since 2010, the team has maintained a consistent winning streak while continuing to grow through each cycle of graduating students and new members.

“I really think that team dynamic is what separates who’s winning and who’s not,” Head Coach Lorinda Gomez said. “You can have all the talent in the world, but I really think them meshing and working together, pushing each other, motivating each other is what separates them from that next level.”

This year team turnover for nationals pushed the coaches to hold tryouts for the first time in the club’s history. Of the 80 archers who competed for a spot, 53 earned places on the national team roster. The season ended with a double victory as the team brought home medals and trophies from both the USA Archery Collegiate Indoor Nationals and the USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals.

“We led the points standings with what we believe to be the largest point deficit that has ever happened in collegiate nationals history,” Rendyn Brooks ’29 said. “There were nine more medal matches happening on the third day of competition … and without those medal matches, it was impossible for anybody to catch up to us.”

Gomez makes sure archers practice shooting four times a week, alongside mandatory team practices on Thursdays. Her coaching style revolves around planning, identifying focus areas and encouraging self-reflection, emphasizing intentional practice. Yet despite the preparation, nature became another opponent at nationals, with wind and rain working against every arrow.

“I think the biggest challenge for nationals was the weather,” Catalina GNoriega ’27. “Michigan was cold, it rained a little bit and the biggest challenge was how windy it was. The wind was very strong and it was very hard to shoot in. It’s just inevitable that one arrow or another is going to end up getting caught by the wind or your body’s going to get caught by the find.”

For GNoriega who is an Olympian, competing with the archery club was both a welcome challenge and a quiet respite.

“I found a family with the team and [have] been able to up my game in archery,” GNoriega said. “There’s this sense of more to life than just your sport and I think a lot of athletes can relate to that. I’m still very competitive and I still want to do really well in archery, so being with a team that has similar goals [because] we all want to win regardless of the levels.”

Unlike many other collegiate sports, archery is both a team and an individual sport, allowing athletes to compete for team titles while also earning individual medals. The team finished the season with 17 All-Americans, two Archers of the Year, 13 mixed-team medals and six individual medals.

“Our plan is to use this 24th win as momentum,” Brooks said. “We’re going to try and do everything we can to harness this momentum, harness this motivation, and bring that back with us this fall whenever we get back into our team practices. We’re going to do a lot of work to keep those team practices high energy, keep them focused, and keep them focused and do what we’re doing.”

As one season ends and another begins, the standard the club has set for itself remains unchanged.

“We always tell the archers, ‘If you’re able to win our Thursday night practices you’re probably going to have a chance to make a World Cup team at some point in your life,” Gomez said. “You surround yourself with the people you want to be like, right? Excellence continues to produce excellence.”

The Student Rec Center opens at 6am, just as the sun slowly peaks from its horizon and the world wakes for the day. But the building doesn’t magically open when the clock strikes 6, its doors are unlocked by someone who rises before the sun: Brianna Shanks ’26, a facilities supervisor and trainer.

“There’s just something about 5:30 in the morning working with the same people,” Shanks said. “You really see a different side of them when the sun’s not even out yet. It’s also really fun to commiserate about how it’s so early and so many people are beating down the door and want to come and work out.”

Shanks came to Texas A&M from El Campo, Texas as an English major and applied for the facilities associate position as a freshman looking to make some money and gain some leadership skills along the way. In the three years she worked at Rec Sports in a position driven by customer service and conflict management, she rose through the ranks by connecting with patrons through her humor. To her supervisors that quality stuck out when it came time for promotions.

“[Shanks] recognizes what is important to tackle first, as well as how to appropriately and professionally interact with people,” said Emily Patterson, assistant director of Operations & Events. “The best part about that, she does it with humor. So, when she continued doing that, that’s when we saw her ability to connect with people and make them feel positive about their experience, even if she had to deliver a negative message.”

From there, she became a facilities supervisor, but her role didn’t end there. After graduating in May, she came back to work for the summer and was met with another responsibility — training the staff under her.

“I wasn’t not confident in myself before stepping into that role as a trainer, but I will say that following my ability to train people and see just how much I actually do know about this job has really boosted my self-confidence,” Shanks said.

As facilities supervisors, staff are responsible for ensuring patrons have a smooth experience through the Strength & Conditioning areas, intramural sports and any reservations around the facility. The role also requires hourly building rounds and conflict resolution, so Shanks focuses on giving staff the skills they need to handle the job.

“She’s not afraid to have a conversation with someone if they’re not pulling their weight on the shift and when she approaches those conversations, it’s not like a lecture of, ‘I know you can do better’,” Patterson said. “Its, ‘Can I say something funny, or can I find a common topic that we like to kind of boost your morale?’”

Yet being a facilities supervisor was not her only responsibility, Shanks was also a student. When Shanks was not at one of the facilities, she was at Sterling C. Evans Library.

“I was an Evans library warrior, I was there all the time,” Shanks said. “But then I just got where I felt like I was on campus all day. I made sure that, even if it meant waking up at five everyday, I was going to do my best. Make sure that I felt happy and healthy and for me that looked like going for a run or getting in a shift at work … work on a little bit everyday.”

With a few more weeks left at Rec Sports, Shanks prepares for her future in academia — planning to go to graduate school to get her masters and doctorate in theology.

“That is a lot of education and a lot of schooling, but academia is really where my heart is at, and I am really excited to honestly just spend the rest of my life in that environment and continuing to teach and develop young minds,” Shanks said.

As one supervisor moves on, the legacy and culture she left behind will remain forever.

“I tell the supervisor staff all the time, if we’re doing our jobs well no one notices, because it is a smooth interaction throughout someone’s entire time at the facility that we’re at,” Patterson said.

Over the course of their 2025-2026 season, the sailing team racked up 29,230 miles. The furthest they traveled was 7728 miles for the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they placed seventh.

“[It was] truly my favorite regatta I have ever attended,” said Evie DuBois ’26, former sailing club president. “We have not always traveled this frequently or far. In fact, we increased our travel regattas out of state by one each semester.”

By expanding both the distance they travel and the number of regattas they attend, the team continued to gain experience. But the competitions aren’t the only perk of the team’s travels.

“When we travel we have fun, while maintaining competitiveness,” DuBois said. “We will get there and do some sightseeing and get dinner as a team. After competition on Sunday we will also get food and take a look around the area before heading back to College Station. When we fly, we try to go on hikes or see the area to take advantage of our travel.”

“We try to make at least one trip like [Maryland] once a year,” said Jonathan Trzecki ’27, president of the men’s rugby club. “Last year, we had the opportunity to go to Tennessee, we went to Notre Dame, Kentucky, Atlanta. We go all over Texas, and this season we’re going all over Texas again, and we got some other big stuff planned as well.”

This year, the team went undefeated in the Lonestar Rugby Conference and reached semifinals in the fall, and won the Lonestar Conference Sevens Championship in spring in Waco, Texas.
In order to keep the success running, the team encourages anyone who’s interested to try out – no experience required. They competed against University of Texas during Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs, and while they didn’t do as well as they wanted, they were still able to progress to regionals.

“For the first time in 15 or 20 years, we were ranked big enough to go regionals without winning our conference,” said Cade Willis ’27, president of the ice hockey club. “It was an exciting year.
Polo

While the polo club didn’t travel the most miles among sport clubs this year, the team still logged 9,741 miles. The footing of the team’s existing stadium was updated, allowing the club to stay close to home and practice for their tournaments.

This year, both the men and women’s team played in nationals, with the women’s team making it to the finals and the men’s team to the semifinals. Although they didn’t hold onto their national title from last year, there was one win that meant so much more — one of the horses, Zury, won best playing pony.

“I [play a] big hand in taking care of the horses, which is a lot of work, so it’s always good to see yourself rewarded through your horse’s success,” said Raegan Schwab ’27, president of the women’s polo club. “[Zury] was trained by a Texas A&M Polo alumni Kayla Nash, and she donated that horse to us, and so we were able to play her and win with that horse.”

Polo’s travelling preparation includes more than just the players and sports equipment — they are in charge of transporting 12 living, breathing animals. For in-state tournaments, the team must prepare to haul the horses around the state and find a place for them to stay. But for out-of-state tournaments, the team rents horses from providers at the location they’re travelling to, posing an entirely different challenge.

“Those are horses that we’ve never been on before,” Schwab said. “With the club horses, we play those horses every single week, [and] we know them very well. Each horse is very unique — they all move different, play different [and] have their little quirks and tweaks. You’re having to manage your own skill, but you’re also having to manage the skill that your horse provides to you, so that’s why it’s a little bit more complex and can be a little bit more tricky.”

The crew club travelled 7,721 miles throughout their season. One of the furthest the team travelled was for the American Collegiate Rowing Association, also known as ACRA in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, travelling 1846 miles. At the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, rower Francisco Andrade ’27 won his single event, the club’s highest finish ever, while their double placed second, helping the club qualify for ACRA in the first time in program history.

“We’ve never really qualified for ACRA, we’ve never even gone, so it was a new experience,” Caitriona Lifton ’27, president of the crew club, said. “They did really well, and both the single and double [they] came away with the best academic awards.”

For Lifton, those results reflected how far the program has come in recent years.

“It’s nice to see the slow progression of us getting into finals,” Lifton said. “We’re going against division teams, teams that are being paid to row. It really pushes us, and it’s really beneficial to see the growth over the years. We’re actually competitive in these, and we’re doing really well.”
