After a 15-year hiatus, Pumpfest is officially back. On Saturday, Feb. 7, climbing enthusiasts and newbies alike will gather at the Student Rec Center for Pumpfest — Rec Sports’ social climbing competition. Climbers of all levels will come together to share the wall, cheer each other on, and enjoy a fun, social day of climbing. The event emphasizes setting personal goals, building connections and celebrating the sport in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Every registered climber will have a chance to win from a pile of gear and goodies thanks to the generous support of brands such as Mountain Hardwear and Sterling Ropes.
Held in a red-point format, climbers may complete as many routes and attempts as they’d like during the 3.5-hour session window. Each climber’s top four completed routes count toward their final score. Ties will be broken by efficiency, rewarding the climber who sends, or completes routes, with the fewest number of attempts.
This year’s Pumpfest is especially meaningful due to its long-awaited return and because it will be the first competition held on Rec Sports’ new climbing tower. Measuring 44-feet tall and featuring 25 roped lanes, the tower is among the best on college campuses and offers climbers a variety of routes to explore.
“When we say ‘competition,’ think more fun run than elite race,” says Todd Grier, outdoor adventures program director. “It’s the climbing world’s version of a community 5K. Just like most runners join a 5K for the experience, most climbers at this event are here to connect, have fun and enjoy a great day on the wall. The point isn’t to beat anyone — it’s to be part of something together. We’re excited to reignite the event and make Pumpfest an annual gathering for climbers in the region.”
If the competition feels intimidating, don’t worry! The event will be split into beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions, so climbers can choose their level of difficulty. Also, climbers can set their own pace to complete routes with unlimited attempts under a supportive atmosphere. Importantly, it’s a fun way to learn from more advanced climbers or connect with beginners to build community!
New to competition — or climbing? Here are a few tips to help you climb smarter and send routes:
- Scope out the routes: Take time to preview routes and determine which are easier and harder. You want to use your time strategically and climb efficiently.
- Make every attempt count: Don’t burn too many tries on one route. If you get stuck, stay calm and try an easier route. You can always come back if time and energy permits.
- Take breaks: Ensure that you have time to breathe, drink water and reset between attempts, especially after a fall. Breaks will help you perform better.
To participate, register for Pumpfest below or on the Rec Sports website and visit the indoor climbing tower during open hours to prepare for the competition.
Spots are filling quickly, so don’t miss your chance — register for Pumpfest today and secure your place on the wall! Grab your friends, set a new challenge and be part of the excitement.
