Now Hiring: Leisure and Instructional Program Assistant “Supervisor of Hobbies”

General Statement of Duties

• • Leisure and Instructional Program Assistants provide essential support for the planning and administration of a variety of recreational sports and leisure programs offered by Texas A&M Rec Sports. Program Assistants play a critical role in supporting program operations by assisting with registration procedures, brainstorming and developing new programming ideas, preparing for classes, and ensuring efficient office operations. The position does not involve teaching but is integral to creating a positive environment and successful participant experience.

Typical Responsibilities

• • Assist with participant registration, including maintaining accurate records and providing information about programs to prospective participants.
  • Support program development by researching trends, gathering input, and offering creative ideas for new leisure and instructional programming.
  • Prepare class materials, equipment, and supplies as directed by instructional staff, ensuring all items are ready and available for scheduled sessions.
  • Set up and break down rooms or areas before and after classes, assisting with moving supplies and arranging spaces according to instructor or program needs.
  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting participants, answering questions, and conveying information about programming and schedules.
  • Maintain class attendance and assist with administrative documentation as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating communication between instructors, staff, and participants regarding scheduling, changes, and participant needs.
  • Help promote a welcoming, inclusive, and safe atmosphere in office interactions and support tasks.
  • Adhere to university policies, including safety, emergency procedures, and Title IX guidelines.
  • Attend staff orientation, training, and meetings as required.
  • Follow established safety protocols and risk management procedures during all job duties.
  • Provide additional office support and complete special tasks as directed by the Assistant Director, Leisure and Instructional, or supervisory staff.

Experience and Abilities

• • Minimum age requirement: 18 years old.

• • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience or interest in recreation, program support, or office administration is preferred.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Successful completion of background check and necessary clearances as per program policy.

Training

• • Job training provided by the Department of Recreational Sports Staff, including risk management, office procedures, and working with minors as applicable.
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with First Aid must be obtained within 3 months of hire through Rec Sports and maintained throughout employment.

Environmental Conditions

• • Will be required to perform physically active tasks such as moving class equipment and supplies, setting up or breaking down rooms, and occasionally assisting with outdoor program logistics.
  • May be required to work in both office and recreational facility settings, occasionally exposed to various weather conditions during outdoor shifts or class setup.

Pay Scale

• • In accordance with departmental policy, the Leisure and Instructional Student Assistant will start at a rate of $12.20/hour and is eligible for a merit raise after four months of service.

Learning Outcomes:

• • Students will develop strong communication skills for effective engagement with participants, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
  • Students will gain hands-on experience responding to individual participant needs and promoting positive group dynamics.
  • Students will acquire comprehensive knowledge of program-specific emergency response procedures and safety protocols for efficient risk management.
