Sports Trivia Rules

Players and Equipment

  1. Each player must present a current Texas A&M student or a Rec Membership ID card in order to be eligible to participate. Failure to do so will prevent an individual from playing until the ID card is presented.
  2. All games will be played in the Student Rec Center Conference Room (room 255).
  3. Teams will consist of 4 players and rosters are limited to 5 total players.

Game Format

  1. Teams will play a preliminary contest to determine seeding for a single elimination tournament. All teams, win or lose, will advance to the single elimination tournament.
  2. Each game will consist of three rounds with a short intermission between each round.
  3. Teams must have at least two (2) players to begin the game. The team can consist of any of the 5 roster players.
  4. Teams will be asked to designate a captain prior to the game beginning.
  5. Each player will have a hand held buzzer provided by the staff on duty for the final round.
  6. How the game works:
    1. Round 1: There will be a 10-minute round where teams will work together to submit an answer to questions. Questions will have multiple parts. Points per question will range from 20 points to 50 points in value and are in random order. Teams will be given a category and the first team to buzz in has the choice to play or pass. The team answering the question will have first shot at all points. For parts of the question they miss, the opposing team will have a shot at answering. Example: Category – College Football.  Question – Name the Top 6 Winningest Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision programs. The first team will have six opportunities to answer. If they get all 6 right, we move to the next question. If they only get 4 right, the opposing team will have a chance to get the other 2 correct. This would be a 30-point question and each answer would be worth 5 points.
    2. Round 2: In the second round, each team will have an equal number of questions. Each question in this round can be worth up to 40 points. Four clues will be given to try and get the team to answer the question. If a correct answer is given after the first clue, the team will receive 40 points. If the correct answer is given after the second clue, the team will receive 30 points, and so on. There will not be a penalty for incorrect answers and the opposing team will not have a chance to steal.
    3. Round 3: Round 3 will consist of individual play.
      1. All players are eligible to answer any question.
      2. All questions are worth 10 points.
      3. If a player buzzes in before a question is completed, the question will not be finished and an answer must be given.
      4. If a player buzzes in prior to a question being completed and answers the question incorrectly, the team will be penalized 10 points.
      5. If a player buzzes in prior to a question being completed and answers the question incorrectly, the question will be completed and the opposing players will have an opportunity to answer.
      6. If a player buzzes in upon completion of a question, no penalty will be given for an incorrect answer, and the opposing will be given a chance to buzz in and answer.
      7. Only one person is eligible to answer a toss up question per team per question. (I.e. If your team is Bob, Randy, Alex, and Josh, once Josh buzzes in, he is the only one on the team that may answer the question.)
      8. All toss up questions must be answered within 5 seconds.
      9. At the end of the round, if time is called a question that is currently being read will not be completed. If the question has been completed, then each team will be allowed time to answer.
  7. The team with the most points at the end of Round 3 will be declared the winner.
