Did you Know?

Many years ago when the Instructional and Experimental Agricultural facilities of the A&M College System were combined and the relocation of these facilities on the west side of campus began, the possibility of the construction of a golf course in the southeast corner of the campus was discussed.

The need for the golf course was apparent to students, former students, and staff members, both from the standpoint of afternoon and week-end recreation and for the purpose of provided facilities for instruction in a leading adult recreational sport.

On March 8, 1948 the Student Committee allocated $4,000 from Exchange Store profits for "Architectural work and preliminary construction for the golf course." On September 12, 1948 the Former Student Association Council allocated $25,000 to help construct the golf course and club house. That same month the Board of Directors of the college appropriated the remaining funds and the golf course became a reality.

On November 22, 1949 Mr. Ralph Plummer, Golf Course Architect, signed a contract to design the course and supervise all construction. Mr. Plummer has done layout and consultant work for many leading country clubs in the state including Northwood, Dallas, Lakewood, Rivercrest, Colonial, Glen Gardens, Odessa, Midland and others.

In January, 1950 a Golf Course Advisory Committe was appointed. This Committe was composed of Mr. A. F. DeWerth, Mr. J. G. Fagan, Mr. J. B. Hervey, Mr. Darlow Irvin, Mr. C. E. Leighton, Dr. Jack Miller, Dean W. L. Penberthy, Dr. R. C. Potts, Mr. Carl Rishler, Dr. Jim Watson, and Mr. C. G. White, chairman. Through the use of this personnel the best people available in Landscape, Agronomy, Construction and Recreation were utilized.

In cooperation with the Floriculture and Landscape Art Department a long range planting program was planned, and the course will countinued to improve for many years and will until it reaches top playing condition.

The Texas A&M Golf Course frequently cooperates with the Soil and Crop Science Department in research efforts by providing test sites on the course.
