Certification Courses

Rec Sports is dedicated to helping our patrons get the training they need to meet job requirements and achieve personal goals.

Rec Sports offers a variety of workshops and certifications that may be required for individuals interested in becoming a Rec Sports fitness instructor. For questions or more information, please contact Anna Taggart at ataggart@rec.tamu.edu or 979.845.4792.

Class Description: Become a certified Tabata GX (Group Exercise) Instructor in this 10-hour certification training course. 7 CECs for ACE and AFAA provided. Learn the science of Tabata High intensity training in the group exercise setting and take your class participants to a new level of calorie burn and fitness. Plus, learn how to set up your own boot camp business safely and effectively.

Class Description: Become a Schwinn cycle coach in this interactive training taught by Lucy Waite, Schwinn Master Instructor. The class covers bike fit, cycling science, physiology and mechanics, and proper riding technique.

CPR Training

CPR is a life-saving skill, and you never know when you’ll need it. Rec Sports offers a variety of certification training courses to help you be prepared!

All classes are taught by AHA-certified instructors. Class participants must register at the Rec Center Member Services desk prior to taking the class. Class dates/times may be subject to change. Class limit: 16.

Fall 2017 Class Schedule & Information

Class Description: Learn CPR, AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and use of barrier devices for all ages. This class is for those who have a duty to respond to cardiac emergencies because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

Dates/Times Offered:

  • Monday, Sept. 11: 5pm – 9pm
  • Thursday, Oct. 19: 5pm – 9pm
  • Wednesday, Nov. 1: 5pm – 9pm

Location: Rec Center room 281

Cost: $45 Rec members; $50 non-members

Class Description: Learn how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Course content includes general principles, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, CPR and AED, and environmental emergencies. This class is for those who have a duty to respond to first aid or cardiac emergencies because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

  • Saturday, Sept. 2: 10am – 4pm
  • Saturday, Oct. 21: 10am – 4pm
  • Saturday, Nov. 18: 10am – 4pm
  • Saturday, Dec. 2: 10am – 4pm

Location: Rec Center Room 281

Cost: $55 Rec members; $60 non-members

Class Description: Learn core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation (AED) use. This class is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.

Become a Certified Personal Trainer

Rec Sports is now offering our Personal Trainer Certification Prep Course! This course will help prepare participants to take a nationally accredited certified personal trainer exam. Rec Sports is often looking to add high quality certified personal trainers to our team. If you are serious about becoming certified and potentially working as a personal trainer for Rec Sports, please contact our Strength & Conditioning Coordinator for more details about our prep course and about the different certification organizations that are available to you.
